Why is Place des Vosges famous?

Place des Vosges is well known as the oldest planned public square in Paris. It was set up in 1612, and this change shaped European city planning in a major way. People also point to its balanced layout and the red brick walls. The roofs are steep and covered in slate.

At first, the square was called Place Royale. Soon it drew Paris’s wealthy families and top social circles. Over time, it became tied to famous names. Victor Hugo lived here in an apartment. Today that home has been turned into a museum for his life.
