Which troops landed at Gold Beach?

Gold Beach was taken by troops from the British 50th (Northumbrian) Infantry Division. The 8th Armoured Brigade helped them, and Royal Marine Commandos also took part. The plan was to seize Arromanches and meet up with American and Canadian forces.

Fighting was brutal in some fixed positions along the coast. Le Hamel was one of the worst spots. Bad seas slowed everything down. The beaches were also full of mines. Even so, the 50th Division used special tanks, called “Funnies,” to push through the mine belts. They also knocked out concrete bunkers without much delay. After that, work started quickly on the Mulberry B artificial harbour. It mattered a lot for the build-up and supply of the Allied effort across Northwest Europe.
