What is the Train Cemetery in Uyuni?

The Train Cemetery, or Cementerio de Trenes, is basically an open-air museum where you can see rusted and abandoned 19th-century British steam locomotives sitting in the open, and it is only about 3 kilometres outside the town of Uyuni.

Back in the late 1800s, Uyuni was a key transport hub for mining companies that shipped minerals out towards the Pacific ports. Then, when the mining industry fell apart in the 1940s, the locomotives were just left out there in the desert, to rot on their own. Nowadays, the salt winds keep working on the metal, so everything is corroded, and it makes this very photogenic, post-apocalyptic scene, which is usually the first stop during salt flat tours.
