What is the best time of year to visit Bolivia?

Visiting Bolivia at the right moment is usually easiest from May through October. During this time, the dry season occurs, the skies are clearer, and getting around is more predictable with roads that are easier to handle. Then again, if you’re after that mirror-like effect on the Uyuni Salt Flats, the rainy season (from December to March) is typically the better choice.

Going in the dry period, sometimes called the Andean winter, helps because the transport network tends to keep working, so it is a safer period for overland routes, Amazon jungle hikes, and even mountaineering climbs. In the Altiplano, the nights can dip well past freezing, so warm layers and thermal clothing are really essential. Meanwhile, the rainy season comes with strong downpours that can undermine road access, especially through the lowlands and the Amazon basin, but it also builds the thin layer of water needed for those iconic reflective photos at Salar de Uyuni.
