What are the Sol de Mañana geysers?

The Sol de Mañana geysers are basically a high-altitude geothermal area in southwestern Bolivia. You can see boiling mud pots, very intense fumaroles, and steam vents that just keep on being extremely active. It sits at almost 5,000 metres above sea level, so it ends up among the highest geothermal sites on the planet.

This unstable volcanic basin covers around 10 square kilometres, and it is completely lacking in plants, like a primordial wasteland. People often show up at sunrise because the sharp contrast between freezing morning temperatures and scalding steam creates striking visual scenes. There are no safety barriers at all, so you have to be careful when you walk, since the brittle crust around the mud pools near 90°C can be dangerous.
