Is Omaha Beach safe for swimming?

Omaha Beach is open and safe for swimming today. In the summer, many families and visitors use it as a recreation spot. Water conditions are checked on a regular schedule. In the busy months, lifeguards watch over the marked swim areas.

People who come for the first time are often shocked by how different the beach feels now. It has a harsh history, but the present is calm. The tides swing a lot, so parts of the shore stay shallow. That makes it easier for wading and for simple water fun such as windsurfing or sand-yachting. Even so, you still need to watch the Channel tides. Before you get in, look at the local tide chart. Go in only when things are steady. Swim only when the green safety flags are up.
