Is Bolivia safe for tourists?

Bolivia is mostly safe for visitors, as long as you take standard care against petty crime, like pickpocketing in busy places. Serious attacks against travellers are not very common, but road conditions and political rallies can sometimes mess with plans.

Most trips go smoothly. Still, it is smart to stay on guard in big transport areas, open markets, and the well-known tourist zones in La Paz and Santa Cruz, where bag-snatching happens. Using registered radio taxis is more reliable than grabbing random street cabs. Also, travellers should keep up with local news about strikes or blockades, known as ‘bloqueos’. These actions are a common political tactic in Bolivia, and they can quickly stop domestic land travel with little warning.
