How far is Afrasiab from central Samarkand?

The ancient archaeological site of Afrasiab is located about 2 to 3 kilometres northeast of central Samarkand, and reaching it is pretty quick. In fact, from Registan Square, it only takes 5 to 10 minutes to get there by taxi, yes.

This sprawling hilly plateau spreads across more than 200 hectares, and it is basically seen as the original ground of Samarkand before it was torn apart by Genghis Khan in the 13th century. Because it sits so close to the modern city centre, it is easy to stitch it into a daily sightseeing route. Many visitors start at the Afrasiab Museum first, where you can see the well-known 7th-century Sogdian frescoes, and then continue walking through the wide excavated hills of the old settlement.
