Can tourists enter Kalyan Mosque?
Tourists can, in practice, go all the way through the interior courtyard and the gallery areas at the Kalyan Mosque in Bukhara. It is one of the oldest as well as largest mosques in Central Asia, so people often treat it like a must-see stop. To enter, you have to pay an entry fee at the main gate, nothing complicated really, just expect it.
The main open courtyard is huge; it can accommodate up to 10,000 worshippers. Around that space, you will find 288 domed galleries, held up by massive pillars; it feels very grounded and weighty. Non-Muslim visitors are permitted to pass through the whole complex, take photos of the eye-catching blue-tiled mihrab, and enjoy the straight sightline towards the nearby Kalyan Minaret. Since the mosque is in active use during major Islamic holidays, you should dress modestly, with shoulders and knees covered; otherwise, you may be asked to adjust your outfit.
