Can tourists walk along the walls of Khiva?
Tourists may wander along a particular, restored portion of the huge mud-brick ramparts circling Itchan Kala fortress in Khiva. Getting up to the wall walkways is done via a stairway placed close to the North Gate (Bagcha Darvaza).
A relaxed walk along these old fortifications gives a great higher view over the inner city’s packed streets and the wide desert spread beyond. The section you can actually walk is a few hundred metres long, and it asks for a small separate fee. Since the parapets have no modern safety railings and the clay ground can be uneven, visitors need to be attentive, especially while approaching the edge or when taking pictures in breezy weather.
