Can I visit Bukhara’s main attractions on foot?
Bukhara’s historic centre is perfectly fit for walking, with almost all major attractions placed within a tight, pedestrian-friendly distance. In practice, you will not need a taxi or public transport to move between the main historical sites.
The arrangement of the old city lets visitors glide along on foot from the Lyab-i-Hauz ensemble all the way to the Ark Fortress in under 30 minutes, passing through the Po-i-Kalyan complex and a range of trading domes during the walk. The terrain is mostly flat, and vehicle-restricted zones keep things calm, so it becomes a very immersive walking experience. Bring comfortable flat shoes, because a lot of the original pathways are uneven cobblestones and dirt tracks, and that can be tiring if your footwear is wrong.
