What is the Cristo de la Concordia in Cochabamba?

The Cristo de la Concordia is a huge monument dedicated to Jesus Christ, perched up on San Pedro Hill in Cochabamba. It rises 34.2 metres tall, and it edges past Rio de Janeiro’s Christ the Redeemer to claim the second-tallest statue of Jesus worldwide.

Built and finished in 1994, the site works as a giant emblem of welcoming, with outstretched arms reaching even farther than the one in Brazil. Tourists reach the base using a clean, modern cable car in order to dodge the dangers tied to walking the 1,399 steps. On Sundays, the inside spiral staircase is opened up so visitors can climb higher and look across the city, as if they are seeing through the statue’s own viewpoint.
