Where is wine produced in Bolivia (Tarija wine region)?

Most of the Bolivian wine, like really the vast majority, is grown in Tarija, close to the Argentine border. That zone is well known worldwide for making “high-altitude wines,” where the vineyards are set from roughly 1,600 to 2,100 metres above sea level.

At such extreme heights, the vines are hit with intense solar radiation, and this pushes the grapes to build thicker skins for protection. It’s a distinctive farming approach, and it usually gives wines with deep, very concentrated colour and high resveratrol amounts. In Tarija, they manage to turn out solid Tannat, Syrah, and Malbec, and also the more perfumed Muscat of Alexandria.
