What is Cholita Wrestling in La Paz?

Cholita Wrestling (Lucha Libre) is a very theatrical, acrobatic wrestling show held in El Alto where indigenous Aymara women step into the ring and fight while wearing traditional voluminous pollera skirts and bowler hats, with long, braided hair.

It started to become more visible in the early 2000s, and it feels like a uniquely Bolivian spectacle. You get the high-flying stunts that people associate with Mexican wrestling, but also with real weight behind it, meaning indigenous women’s empowerment in plain view. For years, these performers were historically pushed aside, yet the “Cholitas” use the sport to reclaim space, and frequently they play heroes who defeat male villains.
