How to see flamingos at Laguna Colorada?

The most reliable way to spot flamingos at Laguna Colorada is by booking one of those multi-day Salar de Uyuni 4×4 expeditions, where the reserve is usually on the standard list. If you visit between December and April, you can almost always catch the biggest migratory groupings.

This lake sits in the Eduardo Avaroa Andean Fauna National Reserve at 4,278 metres, and it works as a major breeding area for three separate species, including the rare James’s flamingo, plus the Andean and Chilean varieties. Going on your own is highly impractical because the land is brutal and there are basically no road signs, so most people leave from Uyuni, Tupiza, or San Pedro de Atacama as the usual route.
