Are the Catacombs of Paris scary?

The Paris Catacombs can feel tense and tight, yet they are meant to serve as a careful historical ossuary, not a spooky ride. Most people who go through them describe the trip as captivating more than frightening.

The setting has a strong mood. You go down about 20 metres below the surface and enter dim, wet, narrow tunnels made of limestone. The passageways hold the arranged remains of more than six million Parisians. There are no sudden tricks, no staged scares, and no lights flashing for effect. Still, if someone has strong claustrophobia, nyctophobia, or mobility limitations, they should think twice about whether the 1.5-kilometre walk underground fits their needs.
